Dawn in the Garden

Sometimes I rose at dawn and stole into the garden while the heavy dew lay on the grass and flowers. Few know what joy it is to feel the roses pressing softly into the hand., or the beautiful motion of the lilies as they sway in the morning breeze. Sometimes I caught an insect in the flower I was plucking and I felt the faint noise of a pair of of wings rub together in a sudden terror, as the little creatures became aware of a pressure from without.

Another favorite haunt of mine was the orchard, where the fruit ripened in early July. The large downy peaches would reach themselves into my hands and as the joyous breezes flew about the trees the apples tumbled at my feet. Oh, the delight with which I gathered up the fruit in my pinafore, pressed my face against the smooth cheeks of the apples, still warm from the sun, and skipped back into the house!

Spring Birdies

Dale and I took some time to enjoy spring break and the last day of winter by taking a short trip to the canyon. We always take our cameras because we never know that we might see. It turned out to be a good day for birding.

The colorful fellow above looks similar to a robin, but is a spotted towhee. I had to really work for these shots of him, because towhees spend a lot of their time in the underbrush digging up grubs and other insects. He calls attention to himself by kicking up leaves. But since he stays under the darkness of the salt cedar bushes, I had to wait quite awhile to get a clear shot of him in a good light.

Mr. Robin seems to be a bit indignant of my camera pointed right at him. Or perhaps he was trying to see if I had any spare grubs.

I like this fellow too. He's a black crested titmouse and is very fast! He's also a challenge to photograph because he doesn't seem to like to hold still! I had to put my camera on rapid fire to get some decent photos of him. I like his fancy hairdo.

New Blog on the Block

My husband, Dale, is a great bird photographer. He not only photographs birds we have in our area, he studies them as well. One day last week, I mentioned that he should start a blog dedicated to his beautiful bird photography. Well, like a good hubby, he listened to me and the result is here. Pop on over and have a look. If you like what you see, please leave him an encouraging comment or two.

Today is the last day of winter--officially. We've enjoyed very mild temperatures for the last few weeks. It has been very dry here! Critically dry. We need rain!

Spring Break!

Spring break is nearly here! At 5:00 pm today, I will be off for a week and enjoying being a wife.
There is spring cleaning on the calendar and even cooking. It will be a laid back, fun week and I'll even try to sleep in!

We had a little freezing drizzle overnight, which will hurt the fruit trees. A little more snow is expected and this could be the biggest winter event of the whole season. However, next week will be back up in the 70's--just in time to clean the garage!

New Month - A New Season Soon To Come!

March is typically very windy in our part of the country. Here is a little poem I wrote about March a few years ago.

March!

March!..not as in soldiers
and not as in Hare
But March!
--the month that blows
All the stuff everywhere!
March!...like a lion
Can blow up your skirt
And sent your hat
Flying..........
Down into the dirt!
March!...days are longer
And at least its not snowing
But just like my nose
The wind keeps on BLOWING!
March!....a bad hair day
As bad as can get...
Only loved by the folks
Who make Final Net!
